Saturday 30 June 2012

All eyes will be on the National Stadium here in Kingston tomorrow evening, when Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake will face off in the 200M Finals for men. This promises to be a scintillating event since Bolt will be running in his pet event, the 200M sprint. Bolt however will be looking to  send a statement to his friend and training partner, Yohan, that he his still the champion, at least for now.

Here are the 200M Semi Finals for men videos:

Fraser-Pryce ran 10.70 to win trials

KINGSTON, Jamaica (Sporting Alert) — Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce sounded the strongest of warnings ahead of the Olympic Games in London with a stunning 10.70 to win the 100m at the Jamaica Championships on Friday night.

Fraser-Pryce time was a Jamaica national record.
The defending Olympic champion blasted home to win the race in a new personal best ahead of Veronica Campbell-Brown, who raced to the line in a seasonal best of 10.82, while Kerron Stewart was third in 10.94.
Sherone Simpson was fourth in 11.01.

Usain Bolt beaten by Yohan Blake at Jamaica trials

Here is what MSN Fox Sports had to say about the men's 100M race at the Jamaican National Trials:

KINGSTON, JAMAICA (AP)
The Fastest Man in the World wasn't the fastest man in Jamaica on Friday night.
That honor goes to Yohan Blake, who blew away Usain Bolt out of the starting blocks and finished the 100-meter final in 9.75 seconds to upset the world-record holder by 0.11 seconds in the Jamaican Olympic trials.
A shocker? Well, that's for the world to decide. One thing for sure, however, is that the calculus for the London Olympics has changed dramatically.
''Nine-point-seven-five, it's awesome,'' Blake said. ''I won the world championship, so I've got that. Now, I'm the national champion for Jamaica, so I've got that. And now, I go into the Olympics like this.''
Blake is, indeed, the reigning world champion, but that victory came with an asterisk because Bolt didn't run that night after being disqualified for a false start. This was their first rematch, their first real race since then. Bolt was considered the favorite, not only because of his world record - 9.58 seconds - but because Blake, his training partner, had never run below 9.82 in his life.
Well, now, he has.
The 9.75 seconds goes down as the best time this year and also breaks the four-year-old National Stadium record; both previous marks were 9.76 - both held by Bolt.
As much as the numbers, though, it was all that daylight between Blake and Bolt at the finish line that told this story. Blake, the man known as ''The Beast,'' let out a primal scream when he crossed.
Bolt just sort of pulled up - no ''To the World'' pose or anything else to celebrate. And for as poor as that scene at the finish line must have looked, the start was even worse. Always the toughest part of the race for the 6-foot-5 defending Olympic champion, Bolt lumbered out of the blocks this time and had to make up heavy ground simply to get in the mix.
Afterward, he said someone near the start line was bothering him, beginning with the semifinals, where he also got off to a bad start.
''I had to ignore it,'' Bolt said. ''I had trouble getting out, but I kept feeling like I could not give up.''
Asafa Powell will join them at the Olympics, after finishing in 9.88.
As was Bolt, who knows there are four more weeks to go before the Olympics - plenty of time to get in shape to actually catch someone instead of avoid being caught. The man who coaches them both, Glen Mills, said Blake came into this race in far better shape than Bolt.
''We're right where we want to be, going into London,'' Mills said. ''We just want to keep them healthy. That's the key.''
But there are two more days of racing left. It starts Saturday with heats in the 200, the race Bolt has always considered more his ''job,'' while the 100 is more like a hobby.
It was widely believed Blake might provide a better challenge to Bolt in the 200 because he holds the world's second-fastest time at 19.26. Bolt's record is 19.19. The 200 final is scheduled for Sunday.
''He's a tough cookie, and I think he'll survive,'' Mills said about Bolt.
Blake certainly will.
He changed the story line on this night. Instead of talking about what it would take to catch The World's Fastest Man, he was fielding questions of a different sort: Is there pressure being the front-runner?
''No pressure at all,'' he said.

The Jamaica Observer's take on the second day of the Jamaican National Trials for the Olympics:

Blake, Asafa to clash in semis

BY PAUL A REID Observer Writer reidp@jamaicaobserver.com
Friday, June 29, 2012

WORLD champion Yohan Blake is drawn in what can be considered the tougher semi-final heat for this evening’s men's 100m event on the second day of the JAAA/Supreme Ventures National Senior Championships at the national stadium.
The 22-year-old Blake, who had the fastest time of 10.00 seconds in last night’s quarter-finals, has been drawn in lane four of the first semi-final, sandwiched between former world record holder Asafa Powell, to his left and World University Games champion Jacques Harvey, to his right.
Also in the heat will be relay gold medalists and World Championships finalist Nesta Carter, Mario Forsythe, Winston Barnes, Kimmari Roach and Oshane Bailey.
World Record holder and Olympic champion Usain Bolt, will run out of lane six in the second semi-final where he will clash with relay gold medalist Michael Frater, Commonwealth Champion Lerone Clarke and two time World Junior champion Dexter Lee along with Nicholas Watson, Kemar Bailey-Cole, Rasheed Dwyer and Kenroy Anderson.
Omar Douglas and Ryan Shields are the alternates.
There will also be the semi-final heats for the women with Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce drawn in the first along with Sherri Ann Brooks, Anniesha McLaughlin and Carrie Russell.
Former World Champion Veronica Campbell-Brown, will be in the second semi-final with Sherone Simpson and Samantha Henry-Robinson while Kerron Stewart, Schillonie Calvert and Jura Levy are drawn in the third semi-final.

Bolt Scare For Fans

The faithful spectators who turned out for yesterday's opening day of the JAAA Supreme Ventures National Senior Championships at the National Stadium held their breath in unison, as the starter called back heat one of the men's 100 metres suggesting someone had false-started and would be disqualified.
With the defending Olympic champion and world record holder, Usain Bolt, present in the race and the memory of his false start and eventual disqualification at last year's World Championship final still fresh in the minds of many, fans feared the worst.
There was much relief when it emerged that it was in fact Ainsley Waugh's 2012 100m Olympic dream that had ended.
On the second time of asking, Bolt coasted to a 10.06 seconds (wind/speed +0.2mps) clocking to take the race. Jacques Harvey of MVP was second in 10.15 while Mario Forsythe of Racers (10.18) was third.
The reigning World champion, Yohan Blake, got off to a good start in his quest to qualify for his first-ever Olympics and recorded the fastest time going into today's semi-finals.
The 'Beast', as Blake is dubbed, looked impressive in winning heat two of four. The Racers' Track Club athlete stopped the clock at 10.00 seconds (w/s +0.8) to finish ahead of clubmate Kemar Bailey-Cole (10.12) and former national champion out of Akan Track, Oshane Bailey (10.26).
It was an MVP clean sweep in heat three, as defending national champion Asafa Powell and Nesta Carter both crossed the line in 10.19 seconds (w/s +0.2), but Carter was deemed the winner. Nicholas Watson was third in 10.23 seconds.
"I just wanted to get the first four steps out of the way and keep my focus for the next 20 metres; it was a good run," Powell said of the race.
The final heat saw Michael Frater chase down the fast-starting Lerone Clarke to take victory in 10.09 seconds (w/s +1.3). Clarke crossed the line in 10.15 seconds to finish ahead of Racers' Kenroy Anderson (10.24).
In the women's 400m, MVP athlete Christine Day emerged as the fastest qualifier for the semi-finals which is scheduled for tomorrow at 7:15 p.m. Day stopped the clock at 51.50 seconds to take heat three with Domonique Blake placing second in 51.94.
Rosemarie Whyte of Racers was smooth in capturing heat two in 51.80. World Championship bronze medallist, Novlene Williams-Mills posted 52.18 to win heat one while 2008 Olympics silver medallist Shericka Williams clocked 52.13 to claim heat four. Williams was followed home by Racers' Davita Prendagast (52.32, while Holmwood standout athlete Chrisann Gordon clocked 52.40 for third and also progressed to the semi-finals.
On the men's side, national record holder Jermaine Gonzales was the fifth-fastest qualifier after winning heat three in 46.39 seconds.
The qualifiers for tomorrow's semi-final, set for 7:25 p.m., are led by Dane Hyatt who won heat five in 45.70. Heat two was captured by Errol Nolan (45.76), while heat four went to Gonzales' Racers' Club's Ricardo Chambers (46.19). Akheem Gauntlett's 47.44 was good enough for victory in heat one.
Other qualifiers include Oral Thompson (46.00) of Swept Club, Rusheen McDonald (46.02) and Edino Steele (46.11).
The opening event of the day saw reigning Olympic 400m hurdles champion, Melaine Walker, and MVP club teammate Kaliese Spencer comfortably progress to this evening's final.
Not eligible
Walker dipped below 55 seconds for the second time this year, as she stopped the clock at 54.88 to win heat two and progress as the fastest qualifier. Shevone Studdart was second in 56.09 seconds. Josan Lucas out of Trinidad and Tobago placed third, but is not eligible to compete in the final.
Holmwood Technical's Janieve Russell ran a career-best 57.04 seconds, which is the best time by a junior this year over the distance to place fourth ahead of Ristananna Tracey (57.92).
Spencer posted 55.92 to take heat one ahead of Daniel Dowie (56.85), Nickesha Wilson (56.95) and Sonali Merril (57.89).
The male equivalent saw Josef Roberston lead all qualifiers into tonight's final. Roberston took heat one in 50.03 seconds. Also advancing from the first heat was Roxroy Cato, who was second in 50.09 with former national champion Isa Phillips (50.21) claiming third.
Two-time national champion Leford Green crossed the line in 50.57 to take heat two ahead of veteran Danny McFarlane (50.96).
The other three men to advance to the final came from the third heat which was won by Trinidad and Tobago's Emmanuel Myers, but he will not feature in the final being a guest athlete. The three to progress were Brian Steele (50.14), Adrian Findley (50.24) and Sabriel Anderson 50.26 seconds.
Yesterday's lone final , the men's javelin, was won by G.C. Foster's Jeffery King with a throw of 60.35 metres. Robert Barnes (54.83m) placed second ahead of Demoy Henry (54.56m). None of the competitors, however, have achieved the A qualifying standard of 82 metres or the B standard of 79.5m.

The trials will run for four days, Thursday july 28 through to Sunday July 1. the first day of the four-day JAAA/Supreme Ventures National Senior Trials at the National Stadium will see  the women's 400m hurdles heats  opening the day at 9:30 a.m., with the heats of the men's 400m hurdles and the men's 100m completing the morning session. The afternoon session will feature some of the world's fastest athletes at the stadium when the 'big boys' come out for the quarter-final of the men's 100m, to be preceded by the heats of the women's equivalent.
